CPU/Ram: p3 677mhz / 128mb
Comment:

I just doubled my ram but my system only recognizes 64mb of the new 128mb memory stick. So, instead of 256mb I only have 192mb.

I don't have an onboard graphics card which may use up ram.

QDI advanced 9 is my motherboard.

I am a novice to anything hardware related but I have noticed this difference between the 2 memory modules sizes(via SPD):-

2 ranks 4 banks (existing memory)
1 rank 4 banks (new memory)

Could this be the reason.

This is the first time I have upgraded any thing on my pc, so I may have overlooked something ovbvious. Thanks.

What are the specs on your new memory?

What display adapter do you have?

TMI.

How much memory is reported when you use the new stick by itself?

Does your new memory have a brand name?

cpk,

I had the same problem when I moved a 256MB stick from one computer to another - it was only recognized as 128MB. The problem, as was replied to in this forum, is that the memory module is high density and my older motherboard was only made to support low density RAM. See my original post here. Seeing as how you have ISA slots on your board, this is almost definitely the same problem.

Yup, it's a density problem. Nothing you do will get the full amount of that memory stick recognized. You'll have to buy the proper type of memory for your board

ASUS A7N8X-X
Athlon XP 1800+
8.5 x 200MHz
1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7

You can avoid many of these Windows problems with Linux. Linspire eases the transition for new users

Thanks for the replies. I had done a forum search for 'ram', but I see now that if I had searched for 'memory' I would have found many threads relating to my problem.

Well, I hope e-buyer UK will allow me to exchange my memory. The crucial site was also very informative.

But, before I do exchange it may be worth doing some troubleshooting by re-bedding the module, try in on its own, clean dimm slots with contact cleaner, swap modules arround.....etc.

This was the brand I bought: Viking 128MB PC133 168pin SDRAM Mfr part#: PC13316X64-CL3

I just have one question though, is Low Profile the same as Low Density?
