I currently have a Creative Labs Audigy. I cannot stand its midi sounds and I do a lot of composing via Sibelius so I prefer that French Horns sound like them and not some wacked out trumpet.
Does anyone know of a sound card with realistic instruments? Or possibly an external synthesizer (if I'm using the correct word)? A software synthesizer would do fine aswell (such as Microsoft's Wavetable or whatever its called (but again I do not like that one very much either)).
I have used Finale 2005 with its SoftSynth and I absolutally love the instrument quality and sounds, however at the cost of $600 and me still paying off my copy of Sibelius I refuse to buy it.

At the risk of sounding like an a**, why would you be composing in midi? You can hook up workstations, midi keyboards (which uses the midi format so you don't want that either), and synthesizers. Sorry, I'm just wondering what you're trying to do.
When all else fails beat the $%!* out of it!!!

Do a Google search for sound fonts. I found tons of them, you should find something to your liking.

angrymen2001, Sibelius plays through midi, so if I record via my keyboard or manually and play it back, it gets played from midi.
