Hi Mick. It was C: and bootable on the old system right?

You changed the Bios to boot from IDE1 instead of IDE0 right?

Did you save the changes before exiting the setup?

Forgot to answer your question. Since the drive is recognized as D: by the system, the jumper should be ok.

One thing I never mentioned before is that you will have to install a lot of drivers for the new system, of course. When I do what you did I usually clear out all the old drivers. That will let windows start with a clean slate. To do that I boot up in Safe mode the first time. I then start RegEdit and delete the following entry:
Hkey_Local_Machine/Enum

It's not really necessary to do that, but it does make for a cleaner system.

hello again mickey
you must enjoy answering all these questions!
it was C and bootable on the old system

I went into bios and changed the boot sequence to 1st my old hard drive (30gb running xp pro) and 2nd my new hard drive 80gb running xp home, didn't see anything about IDE1 OR IDE0
I'm beginning to think it would be better to format the old drive and just use it for storage!
i hope that what i've said above makes sense to you
mick

There are different ways the Bios' name the two drives.

I don't understand why it didn't boot when you selected the second drive. It was first in the sequemce right?

Did you get the 'No system disk' message?

the drives are actually named i.e. quantum fireball which was my old drive
i just moved the old disk so that it was 1st in the sequence and the new disk 2nd, saved the changes then after exiting it wouldn't boot up i can't remember what the whole message was that was on the screen i know one if the options was to go into safe mode, can't remember a 'No System Disk' message
i'll have to try again and write down exactly waht's on the screen.
i'm working nights at the moment so i'll be sleeping today (sunday) i'm off monday tuesday and wednesday so i'll have another look at it then
thank you once again for your help
i was more than pleased that i could actually access the old drive and apart from the odd minor problem the system is working fine
