You haven't heard of them for two reasons.
0. It's a swiss brand. 2. They do not manufacture storage media.
There are tons of other companies that sell enclosure - from (unbranded) generic all the way to top names like LaCie. WD on the other hand actually manufactures hard disks and they do have a decent enough reputation.

I am fond of WD which I've used over years except that they don't have the same warranty as Seagate (5 years)any more. What do you think of Seagate?

Both Seagate and WD rank much much higher than Maxtor in my book, but I have a slight preference for Seagate over WD and was thus highly disappointed when they announced their acquisition of Maxtor.
