Has anyone here used Memtest-86 v3.0 or do they have ideas for a better RAM tester. My computer reboots at random and has been doing so for a while now. I ran memtest and it said in the first 12 minutes of running it gathered over 12,000 errors. My problem is that I hear it's not 100% accurate and I dont want to buy a bunch more RAM if I dont have to and I dont want to take it to a computer shop. My temps are staying at about 46c so I dont think it's heat related. I figured I would ask the REAL experts for advice or thoughts....Thanks in advance.

You say it's been rebooting "for a while now"...was there a time when your system was stable? If so, what have you done since then that may have caused your prob? Have you upgraded any hardware? your RAM? You don't give any details about your memory...is it PC133 or DDR? How much do you have & how many sticks?
Let's say, for example, you have 512mb...2 x 256...& memtest constantly reports errors at 318mb. That should mean that stick # 1 is good, & stick # 2 has a prob, because the error occurs after 256mb. Remove stick # 2 & try running with just stick # 1.

"My problem is that I hear it's not 100% accurate"
There is nothing freely availible more reliable than memtest (to my knowledge).
There are several instances in which memtest86 is not entirely accurate. These include Athlon systems in which the RAM is not performing properly (i.e. cheap), and only occur in the 5th and 8th tests. This is not so much memtest's fault - the RAM does meet the motherboard specifications.
Also, there are some systems that are improperly allocated by memtest, meaning memtest thinks there is more RAM than there actually is. In these cases large, continuous blocks are marked as bad.
These conditions are not at all the norm. Memtest is an extremely well-tested program. Thousands of professionals beyond this forum use memtest.
Cheap RAM is rampant. The problem has expounded by increasingly condensed modules, which are more susceptable to damage and defect. Also, way too much RAM is mismarked and mishandled.
The fact that you have serious issues with Windows (which appear to be transparent to the OS) suggests a hardware problem. Memtest confirms it. Really you have two tests (Windows and memtest) that both point to the same results. With the evidence in hand I would suggest new RAM from Crucial or Kingston.
If you can put in RAM yourself, do not bother with a tech shop.

Jam.....I have done no upgrades to my system to cause the problems. I have 1 stick of 256 meg pc2100. As far as the test reports it listed so many I couldn't keep up (over 12,000 in 12 minutes or so).
Anonproxy.....I do believe the RAM to be an off brand. If my memory serves me correctly the 4th or 5th test was the only one it passed out of the first 8. I have had the same issues with both Win98se and Win2000 so I am certain it's not an os issue. As far as the RAM I can put it in myself but I wanted to confirm it was a RAM issue and not bad power supply, mobo or video card. Obviously you guys feel strongly about the RAM being bad so I'm off to www.crucial.com to buy the gig I have needed for a long time.....Thanks go out to all you guys....

You didn't answer my other question...was this system EVER stable? If so, something must have changed...BIOS setting maybe? Software installation?
Depending on what you use your sysetm for, 1 gig is overkill...512mb is the "sweet spot". Crucial is supposedly the best...but it's expensive. BestBuy carries it & I just checked their website...$160 for a stick of 512mb PC2100...that's crazy!...you could buy a new mobo/CPU for that kinda cash!
BTW, you never said what mobo you have...you didn't post any of your system specs for that matter....

The system was stable at one time but hasn't been for about 2 months(thank god for backup computers). I changed absolutely nothing until AFTER the system became unstable. After the crashing started I reloaded win98se and upgraded to win2000 after that did no good. The thing is a little better now but still crashes alot. Like I said earlier, I think the stick I currently have is generic since there are no identifying markings and I think a reputable place giving a good warranty would want thier product marked. My Specs are as follows:
Asus a7v266c
Athlon XP2000+
256 meg PC2100 RAM
128 meg GeForce 4 video
6 cooling fans (now it maxes out at 46c when gaming hard)
2 80gig Western Digitals
bla bla blaLast night I ordered 1 piece of 512 meg PC2100 from www.crucial.com and it was less than $100....Thanks again to all of you!
