MemTest86 freezing

Specs: XP, Centrino 0.9GHz
I got a call from my friend too day who is having problems with an old PC he has. It runs XP and keeps freezing, resetting and BSODing. I have a quick look and can't find any problems with the software, so I put a ubuntu live CD in and load up MemTest86+ to check the RAM. I ran the test twice and each time it locked in, the timer and progress bars stopped moving and it didn't respond when I pressed Esc, c (to open the config), Ctrl+Alt+Del and the power button. But in the top left of the screen the '+' in MemTest86+ kept flashing. The two times it locked in where at different points in the scan (4 min in and 14 mins in). The only way I could get the PC to do anything was to hold the power button in for 5 sec and turn it off.

I have never had MemTest freeze on me before. Do you think this is a problem with the RAM or would it be a more serious problem like MB/CPU? Any help or advice someone can give would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check for overheating? Blow the dust out of the heatsinks?
