hello, i am wanting to upgrade my laptop memory from a 256 to 512, the only problem is that i am on a budget and someone is selling a 2 * 512mb for £15, the spec is 200pin DDR II SDRAM sodium ramm PC2-4200 one is crucial one is acer. What i am worried about is whether or not both are compatible with my laptop i know the crucial is not sure about acer also another issue i have is that the 2 512mb ram is a pc2-4200 and the one i need is a pc2700 so my question is pc2-2400 same as pc2700 and will it fit my laptop and not affect it in any way cheers and aplogies for going on bye
If you purchase from Crucial, you can be pretty sure that the RAM will work in your system. With Ebay you are lucky if you even get the thing you order. :-)
Let me ask you something. Do you think a seller on eBay can buy RAM sticks cheaper than an online reseller like Newegg.com? This is assumming the RAM is of equal quality. RAM is a commodity item. You are definately fooling yourself if you think all RAM is the same. RAM chips, like everything come in various grades. A memory stick assembled with substandard chips MIGHT work but it is not going to be reliable. With the price of RAM as low as it is there is no credible reason to buy noname RAM.
In the case of Crucial RAM they guarantee their RAM to work if you buy what they say will work. They also ship for free and have a lifelime warranty. The warranty is worth something too, because they will be there if you DO have a problem.
yeah i have checked on crucial and its says PC2700 but the one i saw on ebay was PC2-4200 thats y i am asking if i do buy the PC2-4200 will it work on my laptop cheers
I would say that it may well not work. Laptops are fussy about RAM. You are only looking at the speed. There are other important specs. The big issue is density. If you don't already know about these things then you should buy from a vendor that guarantees the RAM to work in your computer alone side your existing RAM. I just explained about eBay and RAM. I know lots of people will say otherwise but I would never buy any electronic hardware from eBay. Once a month there is a computer show at a local flea market. The same vendors seem to be there each time. I still won't buy things like RAM or MBoards there because if I have a problem I may need to wait a month or travel across town to exchange. Ain't worth it to me.
Other vendors besides Crucial are Kingston Technologies, Newegg, Mushkin, all have online configurators to determine the correct RAM.
That's why you ask on here for compatibility, and in my 3 years of buying, literally tons of pc components on ebay, verging into 200 components i have never had a faulty or broken component, as with everything there is a risk i agree, but as long as you find a good seller and check feedback and know what your looking for id go with Ebay it may be a personal thing but id rather save money like i have done before using Ebay. As long as you pay with paypal you have that to back up your buying guarantee!! Sure has always worked for me, unless im rather lucky :)
