Hi all,

I need your suggestion on the kind of memory I should use on my computer. Current this computer has 96 MB of RAM (64 MB PC100 + 32 MB PC 100) My friend just tossed an older computer but gave me the memory. My computer has two memory slots. I'm wondering if I should keep its at 96 MB of PC100 or settle for a slower PC66, but at 192 MB? I'd really appreciate your feedback.

Thanks

Odds are, your system won't be using the whole 192MB or even the 96MB of memory 100% of the time, stick with the faster but lesser configuration.

The internet is a series of tubes!

Minimum requirement for win2K is 64mb. So with a minimum of number of applications running you would probably be ok with the 96mb. If you load the system down with a lot of apps, then the extra memory would probably be best.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

A lot of older Compaqs had proprietary memory, or other quirks. It may well not work at all, which makes it a moot question.

Try it and when your get error beeps at boot you will have your answer.

They have a memory finder which is very good for deciding memory type/configurations

Crucial says you need this:

They also say this:

Your system only supports modules made with a specific type of chips. While you might find what appears to be the exact same memory for a lower price elsewhere, the cheaper memory might not work in your system.

See there, you have solved your conundrum.
