I am trying to upgrade an HP Pavilion XL866: Motherboard ASUS A7V-VM, Max. Memory 1GB.
It originally had 128MB SDRAM, 133MHZ.
I tried installing (2) 256MB SDRAM, 133MHZ sticks and Windows kept crashing.
I removed 1 of the sticks and the system works great.
I tried switching the sticks (to see if one is bad) and still works great.
I put both in again and crashed again.
I figured maybe the second bank is bad. So I then put (2) 128MB SDRAM, 133MHZ chips and.....it works fine.
I'm stumped, any ideas?
The memory I'm installing is SPECTEK brand name.
Thanks to all replies.

Download a program called memtest86, it creates a bootable floppy with the diagnostic program on it...boot off the disk, run the test & see what happens. Try it with both sticks, then one at a time...see if there's a difference.

How long does the memory test usually take?
I started by testing both sticks first and it has been running for almost 3 hours and has recorded that it has passed 4 tests so far.
Not sure what I'm supposed to be looking for.
