: Hi, I just bought two, 1 gb ddr 266 mhz, memory sticks. When I got hime, I found out that it must have been packaed wrong or something, as it was 2, 1gb DDR 400 mhz. I tried anyway to put them in and of course they fit, but my COmputer only recognises... 32 mbs of it, or of an on-card memory. So I checked the momory settings and it says that the mmory speeed is 266 mhz... I really dont want to drive anther 6 hours or so to exchange it, can I change my memory speed somehow?
I only Batch if possible, 2000 more lines of code, oh well.

Why would you need to drive 6 hours? If you live that far from a retail computer store you should order online. Cheaper anyway.
YOu issue with the RAM sounds more like a density issue than a speed issue.
If it was the spped rating of the RAM and that was an incompatibility the computer probably wouldn't boot.
Density referrs to the amount of memory contained on each of the little chips on the memory module.
Go online to crucial.com and enter your model number of the Dell to find out what type and amount of RAM is compatible with your computer.
Did you remove your old RAM? Make sure you have the RAM fully seated. You need to press down hard. Also be sure the computer is UNPLUGGED when changing RAM or anything else on the motherboard.

Thanks... according to this there should not be a problem though... I will get to the Windows Screnn And then after that nothing happens, its like my computer refuses to initialise the memory. Is it possible that its the memory speed? I mean It will boot, but it can't start windows. Im not 100% sure, but i don't think booting takes much memory. ITs the OS that does.

Are you running both the original RAM and the new RAM? Dis you go to crucial.com and find out what RAM is compatible?
Try pulling all the RAM and just installing 1 of the new sticks in the first slot.

Ive tried almost all combinations. 1 and 1, both of them, just one. The chips are different sizes if that makes a difference, the guys aid it was just different manufacturers.

How about posting the model number of your Dell so one of us can check it out & confirm what you're telling us?

Ok, its a Dell OptiPlex GX260 Series Desktop/PC

OK, I just checked Crucial.com & it shows that your system accepts a max of 2GB, 1GB per slot. It lists DDR333 & DDR400 as choices.
You didn't post the brand name of the RAM you bought. Is it generic? 2GB of decent name brand DDR400 can be found online for about $40. Cheaper if you're willing to deal with rebates.
