Subject: Memory PROBLEM...SPD??
OS: Windows 2000
CPU/Ram: 350Mhz/96MB
Comment:

I just upgraded from 64MB ram to 96MB ram...

Upon bootup...my BIOS detected the extra 32MB and read 96MB of RAM...but right after that i received this message in the BIOS:

"Serial presence detected (SPD):Unavailable - memory speed unknown"
"100mhz memory assumed"

I am worried that i am going to mess up my computer....does anyone know if i should remove the new memory or if i am safe leaving it...even though each bootup i get the same message in the BIOS?????

My ORIGINAL 64MB says PC-100Mhz on it...but the new stick of 32MB does not say whether it is 100 or 133.....i am assuming it is 133 and it is clocking back to 100....am i right? andam i safe?..because i keep getting the same message on bootup in the BIOS...

Check in BIOS to see if the memory speed is 'set manually to a specific speed' or set to 'SPD'.

Hi Tiesto14

I have the same message too during boot up.
WARNING: SPD not found at....
Don't worry. This is okay. Your safe.
What I found out about this was that the memory that I bought did NOT include Serial Presence Device(SPD). Which is something that identifies that memory module to the system. NO big deal. The warning just comes because the system is not able to ID the momory at boot up to automatically set the standard speed and timing for it.
As I understand it, the non-SPD memory will run at the same speed that the other memory modules are running. That is to say, it will run at whatever the system speed and timings are set to, whether done automatically by the other SPD modules, or by you changing the system memory yourself manually.
Next time you buy memory always confirm that it is SPD compliant.
I still get the silly warning two 3 years later.

Doxy

I still get
