Hi
I just acquired a Data General server built in 97 by ACER. It is a VC520H Model with a Pentium Pro 200 Processor and 16 Mb of memory. I can install more memory but computer won't allow more than 16 mb to be recognized. The place to change it is BIOS is greyed out. I have searched for a manual with no luck. I can find a simular motherboard but not the exact one I have. Data General doesn't have any info on this old model on their web site and ACER doesn't show the exact motherboard combo I have. Does anyone know of a way to get around the memory block? I would like to install 48 mgs of memory so I can install W95 on it for my Grandson.
Thanks James

in this case, some motehrboard can only support up to certain memory limit. you might have to search ur motehrboard manual for more info. but since you can't find anything about it...well guess you are out of luck.
its not worth to upgrade your memory becasue your pc is already old enough. seriously.

Judging by the spec, I believe the problem is to do with matching memory. Most computers of that age can take 384 meg, so limitation is not the problem. You simply need matching pairs of RAM, i.e. two 32meg SDRAM simms would work.

You cannot change mempry size in any BIOS, it is done automatically.

Thanks, but on this computer it has a BIOS setting for changing the memory manually. I was hoping someone might have a manual they could glance at to see if there is a jumper on the board for locking the BIOS to 16 mb of memory. I have tried matching sets of memory and it will recognize all sets but only 16 mb gets counted even if I install memory in all 6 slots. There is a box in BIOS showing the 16mb limit but locked so I can't change it....It shows Mb 15 and 16 reserved for system memory if anyone knows how to get around that feature. This was a server in an automotive parts business running 5 remote terminals for counter lookup of parts. Thanks james

Hi
Think I have solved the problem. I turned off Parity checking by the SCSI Card and now it will recognize more memory.
Thanks for comments. james
