I have been asked to help someone with the following problem. She has a qdi Kudoz7 v. 2.0 motherboard with 3 dimm sockets. She has 2 memory sticks of 256 MB each in consecutive slots but the system only reads 256 of memory, not 512. Lets assume they are in slots 1 & 2. Remove the stick from slot 2, the computer works fine and reads 256MB of memory as it should. Swap the sticks over and the same thing, so both sticks work O.K.
Put both sticks in and it only picks up 256MB.
Put either stick on its own in either slot 2 or 3 and the computer won't get past POST. It continually beeps. This suggests to me that slots 2 & 3 aren't working properly, but it might be that with that particular board you have to put the sticks in the correct slots. The board manual doesn't say anything about that though. Any ideas anyone, and if it is likely to be duff connections is there any software that can test it, or do I need to remove the motherboard and look for dry solder joints?

Try putting one in slot1 and one in slot3, it might work

Tried that. The computer starts up (no beeping) and works O.K. but still only sees 256MB.

Check the BIOS for any memory settings. Is there a newer BIOS that yu can flash to? It's also possible that the MB being somewhat old, may only accept 256 MB as the maximum.

The BIOS doesn't have any memory settings. Been through that in detail. The manual says the board will hold up to 2GB memory so that is not the problem. Not sure that a newer BIOS will help - I'm pretty convinced its a hardware fault.

Thanks ron and Sandor for your input so far. Do you know of any software that tests for that sort of thing?

It probably has to do with the number of banks that are allowed. Since the max capacity is 2GB & you have 3 slots, that would seem to be the problem...otherwise the max capacity would be 3GB. Check the manual or DFI website

My mistake. I've checked the manual and it does support up to 3GB so I'm still looking for a possible solution.

From what I see in the original post the system will POST and detect the RAM in slot 1. If the system is booted with a stick in slot 2 or 3 then no POST. Finally when both sticks are in 1 and 2 or 1 and 3 then one stick gets detected and used. Since both sticks seem to work one at a time in slot 1 then I would suspect the other slots are not working. How old is the system? Has there ever been memory in the other slots? What type memory are the sticks, are both of them the same type and size?

Richard, thanks for your input. The mobo is about 2 years old , the lady in question having had her computer upgraded at the time with new mobo, processor and ram. 512 MB of DDR ram was put in but the board only ever recognised 256. Both sticks are exactly the same although I couldn't tell you the make or whatever since I'm not with the machine. At the time she took it back to the guy that built it to look at the problem but he couldn't fix it and she has basically left it since then, until recently when she found out I had some knowledge of computers. My feeling is the same as yours, that the 2 slots don't work, but is there any other way to prove it?

I can't think of an easy way. If you take a good stick and place it in the slot and it will not work then I would suspect the slot is bad.
