I'd take a Maxtor Diamond Max 9 over a Western Digial Caviar, assuming those are the models you're looking at, because the Maxtor has fluid bearings and the WD doesn't. If the WD is at least $10 cheaper, however, the fluid bearings probably wouldn't be worth it.

My buddie just replaced a Maxtor 80Gb drive, mechanics in it failed for some reason.

I vote WD as well. All other arguments aside (noise, speed, design etc) I have just had too many Maxtor's fail in under a year.
Maxtor's support and RMA policy is still superior however.
