Hi, I'm looking to buy a new 300GB hard drive but don't know which brand to buy.

Maxtor DiamondMax 10 6B300R0 300GB Ultra ATA/133 7200RPM Hard Drive w/16MB Buffer $152.00

or

Western Digital Caviar SE WD3000JB 300GB Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM Hard Drive w/8MB Buffer $150.00

Which one would be better to buy?

And I have a Biostar M7VIG PRO MB, would
it support the 300GB or would I have to buy
a IDE controller card?

if the specs you listed are correct, the Maxtor is the better buy. As for your mobo supporting it, you'll need to verify it by looking at their website. It may require a bios flash to see the entire drive.

In theory, ATA133 w/16MB buffer should be better, but I prefer WDC

I've had good experiences with both WD and Maxtor.

The Maxtor has better specs but you may not notice any difference in performance between the two.

Neither.

You can get a 300 gig Seagate at Compusa for $130 after rebate. Much rather have a Seagate since they are the most reliable drive on the market currently.

As for Maxtor vs. WD, I'd put my money on a WD, not that I like them. RMA rates however have been better on WD.

as jam said, the maxtor would, in theory, perform better, but i prefer WDC as well. they are much more reliable. i bought to HDDs of the same size for two identical systems, one each for my two cousins. except i could'nt get two WDCs of the same size so one was a WDC and one was a Maxtor. the Maxtor failed after about 4 months (this was two years ago), but the WDC is still going strong. WDC is much more relaible.

argue for your limitations and sure enough, they're yours

I am getting the 250 GB Seagate Ultra ATA-100 7200 RPM 8MB cache hard drive from TigerDirecct for $80. Check out the link.

With a 5 year warranty, you can't beat this anywhere.

Let me add another vote for WD...I wouldn't use a Mxtor if anyone gave it to me, as I have had too many probloems with them in the past. WD and Seagate are all I would use.

Ditto on what jam said.
I've been using WD drives for years now and never a problem. I'm presently building a new computer and it will get 2 WD SATA 250GB drives.

No matter which forums you go to, everyone will have their preferences. You need to do research to see which company you want to go with. The hard drive with bigger cache would be more beneficial (allows the CPU to put data to be saved into the buffer and work on something else, rather than waiting for the hard drive to finish).

I have 4 WDC drives arranged in two separate raid arrays...I like them, although one seems to hum a little. I have one maxtor drive which has been quiet and hasn't caused any problem. I have an old seagate that has a ton of bad sectors.

As for your computer, Win XP should be able to handle it.
