i have just bought a new maxtor diamond max plus 9 with 8mb cache 80gb. i am just checking to see if this is normal when you are accessing drive like copying files etc it makes a noise, as it it does. but this drive is meant to be a quite drive and the noise is not overly loud but loud enough to hear it when sitting at desk, it does not whine, sqeak, bang or anything like that. my previous drive was a 1.7gb and made quite a bit of noice when accessing, i just imagined with the quite technology this drive would be almost silent. am i over reacting?

WOW THAT IS A BIG JUMP, FROM 1.7 TO 80!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i was about to post this same message LOL, but then saw yours. My 60g maxtor is makin some noise too. I had an IBM, and it died, (stupid ibm always does)it was quiet. I have heard a drive with dying heads, and it is very different than what (we???) are hearing. If u are earing same thing!

I'd go to Maxtor's website (www.maxtor.com) and download PowerMax, their diagnostic software. Run the program and it will tell you what's up. (If it still tests good, I'd run it every other day or so for a while until you're satisfied...and I would back up religously until you are!) Best thing: If it is bad it will give you an error code to help you return it much easier!
