Hallo.
Recently i had a crush on my machine and i had to replace my BIOS chip.
Earlier today i tried to reinstall win2k and i found out that when i start my computer i get two beeps coming out of my harddisk drive [Maxtor ST020H2] [i also tried to start the computer without the AGP display adapter to re-check the source and the tone of the beeps and i am absolutely sure that the beeps are coming out of my hd drive].I looked in Maxtor's home site and they claimant that "Maxtor hard drives do not contain audio speakers. Some failure mechanisms may make a regular repeating beep from the computer's internal speaker. This may or not be hard drive related. Check your system documentation for an explanation of system beep codes. If a drive failure is possible, it is always important to make an immediate backup.", so i recheck and i am sure that the beeps are coming out of the hd drive.
I also have another hd drive on this machine but i don't want to try and install anything unless i am sure that its not a power supply problem.
Any idea guys ?
Thanks
Elad

I know it sound funny, but the beeps are coming out of the hd. I also didnt believe it myself and i checked a few times and i am 100% sure now, i also tested this issue when the pc speaker was disconnected and it still did the same thing.
any idea guys ?

Don't listen to those ignorants!
Of course some Maxtor drives are able to
beep, even though Maxtor states that "...Maxtor hard drives do not contain audio speakers. Some failure mechanisms may make a regular repeating beep from the computer's internal speaker..."They DO indeed contain a piezo tweeter, and they DO beep!
I know it, because I've got a Maxtor Diamond Plus 9 drive (which will be the LAST Maxtor drive that I will EVER buy!) and it does the same thing.
Take a look at http://www.techimo.com/forum/tid43161/pp20/pn1/index.html
Instead of ignorants, they got people that will actually try to solve your problem.
On that thread, you'll see a lot of Maxtor users having the exact same problem. And learn two ways that might solve the problem (you should of course replace the drive the exact moment you've resqued your data).
You will also learn that Maxtor technicians admit that the exact beeping sequence (which I believe is this one: http://www.techimo.com/maxtorbeeps.mp3) is a signal that the Maxtor drive failed to spin up.
Hope that helps.
