Maxtor external HD error

Comment:
i have a 500gb external connected to my system via usb. after i transferred some video (.avi) files from my smaller external to the 500gb, NO files on the 500gb could be opened. the error message is: "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable." i restarted and tried various usb ports, same error. i tried to check the external for errors but nothing came up because it does not see any files on the external to check. however, when i check the space available on the 500gb, the maxtor software says there are 0 bytes, meaning that all is used up. ?! is there a virus? how do i remove the error? are my files still there? any help would be appreciated....

See the runtime.org stuff maybe.
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Does this drive have it's own power supply, or usb only? Maybe not getting enough power. Try other usb sockets on the the rear panel.

the runtime stuff took forever to analyze the 500 gb. it only tried to recover the material that was transferred from the small drive, not the stuff that was originally stored on it. how do i get that stuff?
