Maxtor drive not recognised USB

I have a maxtor diamond drive that will not be recognised by xp when connected thro an external hard drive case connect thro the usb port, it comes up in device manager as usb storage device with the little yellow icon attached, any ideas on how to get xp to recognise this drive, I only want to use it for storage, it is a 80 gig drive

Didn't you read the instruction that came with the case? If you did you would have been told that the drive jumper settings should be configured to "Master" mode for all 3.5" and 5.25" IDE/ATAPI drives.

Ive tried all configs with jumpers with no luck, I have just rebooted and set boot config with usb device as first boot in bios and it has picked it up as the correct drive when booting into windows xp, so I reformatted it through windows and hopefully all will be well!!!

Reformatting a HD in an external USB case just to make Windows recognize it never works. Whats the Case brand name? BTW you can even remove jumper just to see if it works (sometimes it do).
