I have a Maxtor 20 Gig harddrive here, and its ATA 100. I have a Pentium 3 Motherboard with no ATA 100, nor do i have a 80Pin cable. Is it OK to still hook it up and use it, i already hooked it up and installed Windows XP Pro on it. I would really like to make sure before i do anymore ussage on the computer.

it will work
but just you will not get the highest performance out of your hd
it will run at the highest ata speed that the mobo can support

I could be wrong, but without an 80-wire IDE cable, I think it will only run at ATA33...I don't think it will even run at ATA66 without it.

It will work fine, but without motherboard support and the 80 way cable it will only ever run at ATA 33

You might want to check your MB specs on the IDE thruput. As was stated in respone #3 without 80 wire cable I think you'll only get ATA33. your MB may be capable of ATA66. Thos numbers only represent maximum burst speed anyway. Your drive still will probably perform well. RPM & average access times are about as important as ATA speed. Check to make sure you have DMA enabled. Device manager> harddrives> Maxtor> properties> settings> check DMA

To get the maxium perfomance out of my drive im better off buying a ATA 100/133 card it sounds like. How much does a card and cable run for though?
