My problem seems to be with my motherboard/ide cable.. I don't know. I recently had a 40GB Maxtor go bad. I replaced it with a 120GB Maxtor, with 8MB cache. BIOS detects the right "size", and XP works fine, however, the BIOS does not use the correct access mode... it should be using UDMA 5, but it is using PIO mode 4. My board (Gigabyte 7DXR) supports up to ATA 100, as does the integrated RAID controller. The new drive supports upto ATA 133. I am using an ATA 100 cable, which I suppose should work at ATA100 since thats as fast as my MB supports. Am I wrong?? This is really buggin' me -- not only is my throughput in XP suffering, but my Ghost backups are taking FOREVER!!! I've tried extra cables, changing the position on the cable etc. This drive is on the the 1st IDE controller, by itself, as MASTER. Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Side note: I don't think its the BIOS version... I had to upgrade the BIOS (ver. 10a) to detect my XP2400+. And, my other 40GB drive is using UDMA 5 in BIOS/windows(connected to RAID controller -- IDE #4).
I fixed this by disconnecting resetting CMOS (disconnecting the battery).
This was a suggestion from Gigabyte tech support, which I must say really impressed me! They responded to my email within 15 minutes -- I was expecting more like 15 days!
