Hi, I bought a Toshiba P30 for a friend. He used it for 2 weeks while he was on holiday and when he came back the DVD-RAM drive was broken.
It's a Matsus---a DVD-RAM UJ-820S firmware version 1.50
The problem is that it cannot read ANY cd/dvd
When I put in a CD or DVD, it recognizes the type of media anc changes CD-ROM icon accordingly, but it cannot read anything. I took it down to the shop and he poped in a DVD, it worked ! then tried few other DVD and CDs and they didn't. Since I live in Iran, and Toshiba refuses to do anything to do with Iran, I am unable to send it for international guaranty for repairs. Any ideas anyone ?I have searched the internet and found several people having problems similar to mine. My Firmware is 1.50 but Toshiba/Matsus---a don't have any firmware posted on their sites.
This is the error I get when I try to read a CD/DVD:
D: is not accessible
Incorrect functionAny ideas ?
computing.net rocks

software:
continue search for firmwarehardware:
bang on it, clean it, trial and error>> try other configurations/cables/OS
"I have searched the internet and found several people having problems similar to mine." >>Have you found any of these people with resolutions to this?

Ha ha ha, computing.net has censored the name MATSUSHlTA because it contains a rude word !!
Do I suppose I cannot say dick tracy (Dlck Tracy) or p--sy Cat (PU55Y CAT).
Anyways.
The drive was bad. I changed it for a combo and the combo works perfectly. Apparently if you pop in a scratched DVD in a laptop dvd-ram drive and it retries to read it a few times, the lens becomes unusable !
Unfortunately the new drive was also the same brand. There aren't many optical drive brands out there....
thnx allcomputing.net rocks
