I have a used 10 Gig HD from an old computer. Im thinking about installing it onto my new one as a slave. But the lable on the hard drive states the following
Master/Single On Slave Off
Does that mean I cant use it as a slave? And if I can how do I set jumpers for it?

40 GB HD
256 MBs of DDR 333 RAM

Normally , for IDE drives, you can jumper them either as ...

1.
Drive 1 as Master w/slave ,Drive 2 as Slave .

2.
Drive 1 Cable Select (CS) , Drive 2 as Cable Select (CS).

Either way the Master must be the drive with the OS, and should be on the end of the cable , slave goes in the middle.

This link should help in finding the correct jumper placement for your drives.

It's a myth that the master has to be on the end of the cable. That is only if you use cable select.

The drive can be set as slave. You just have to decode the instructions. Sometimes they can be confusing. We cannot help you without knowing the make and model of the drive.

I have a 200GB maxtor that only works with the cable select method. If you encounter any problems with your configuration try cable select and set it up using the appropriate connectors on the IDE cable.

Avun, for a slave you should have no jumpers connected. That means no jumpers between the upper row and the lower row. It's ok if there is a jumper between two pins on the upper row. Thats just the way the jumpers are stored.

Okay. Well my hard drive input/output coble ( Dont know what they call it.. Lol ) Has a thing on it that says master and another that says slave. I was just wondering because on the hard drive it says
Slave
Off
And master/single on I was thinking it was a master only hard drive... if there is such a thing.

Avun, ignore the Master/Slave labels. That is only if you are plugging the drives to use Cable Select. Don't do that.

Plug the drive as I suggested in response #6.

There is no such thing as a Master only drive.

If you have an empty `large' slot you can get inexpensive brackets to mount a hard drive in one of them.
