When installing two IDE devices on a single channel does the master connect at the center or end of the cable.

Yep, but before you hook it up that way do you have two optical drives as well?

"When installing two IDE devices on a single channel does the master connect at the center or end of the cable." - Eric
it doesnt matter if master is connected to middle one of the IDE cable or center one of the IDE cable as long as IDE devices' jumpers are set right.

Convention says put master at the end. This is done so that in the event the device is set to CS (Cable Select) the one at the end becomes Master. Merubin is right. As long as the jumpers are set to Master then it doesn't matter which connector you use.

If you have set the jumpers to *cable select", the end connector is master and the middle is the slave.
If you set the jumpers, such they decide the devices states. e.g.
master
master with slave
slaveThen the connector used is unimportant.
Good luck - Keep us posted

Cable Select is for pussies...use the "hard" settings of "master" or "slave".
It's good practice to put the master on the end connector, but it's not absolutely necessary. The only time it HAS to be on the end, is when using Cable Select.

The order matters is you have a newer system using ATA100 and 80 wire IDE cables. These cables can be identified by the colored connectors. For these configurations the blue is MB, the grey is slave and the black is master. In theory cable select should work with this setup. However, optical drives sometimes don't work correctly using cable select. It is usually better to use master/ slave. Also with these systems it is not usually critical that the SECONDARY
master be a HD. You can just as well use CD/master, HD/slave. This is sometimes easier to connect the cables.

Hey OtheHill,
Yes, 80-wire cables are color coded, but the colors only make a difference when using the cable select setting. Like I said, putting the master on the end is a good habit to get into. And if you're only using one device on the cable, it's the only way to go. But if you're using the master/slave jumpers instead of cable select, & you're putting 2 devices on the same cable, it doesn't matter which one goes where. Try it, if I'm wrong, you can always change it...

Try setting the drive as a slave and installing it on the black end. I don't think it will work. You can pull the cable from a master drive set as I described and the slave will still show up.
