an adaptor is like $5. Why would you want to rewire it yourself?

Because I need one right now and I don't think any store does one hour shipping.

Unfortunately, it's not just a matter of a wiring job. The adaptor does some processing to change the nature of the signal.

A simple cheap PS/2 to USB adapter will not work unless the mouse is a combo mouse - designed to be used with both a PS/2 port connection and a USB port connection. Most if not all of the time the connector on the cord on such mice is USB, and the adapter converts it to PS/2 use - the genders are opposite to what you would need.

The same applies to a cheap PS/2 to serial adapter - the mouse must be a combo one designed to be used with both a PS/2 port connection and a serial port connection (usually 9 pin) - in that case the connector on the mouse cord is most often if not always PS/2, and the adapter converts it to serial port use, usually 9 pin ones.

If the mouse is not a combo mouse, the necessary circuits to use it in another type of port are not there, and it will not work with any cheap adapter. You can look at the mouse labelling, or look up the model on the manufacturer's web site - if it does not say it is a combo mouse or can be used connected to a USB or serial port as well as a PS/2 port it will not work with a cheap adapter.

If the mouse did not come with an adapter when it was new, it is not a combo mouse.

Even if it is a combo PS/2 serial mouse, there are several possible ways of wiring the adapter, and you must get the correct one or it won't work - if it came with one that one will work for sure.
As far as I know, USB to PS/2 adapters are standardized, but like I already said I have only seen ones that are the opposite genders to what you would need.

You can get more expensive adapters designed to connect a PS/2 mouse, or a PS/2 mouse and PS/2 keyboard to USB, but there is an electronic circuit required to be integrated in them, and they are are a lot more expensive than buying a USB mouse, or a serial mouse, or a combo mouse.

Could you re-wire your PS/2 mouse so it could be used with USB?
NO, unless you also wired it to an electronic circuit that converts one to the other.
The cheapest solution is to get yourself another mouse.
