OS: Win98 SE
CPU/Ram: 400 Mhz, 64 MB
Product: Tohiba Satellite
Comment:

I just formatted and reinstalled Win 98SE on a Toshiba Satellite 2100CDT laptop. This was no easy job as many of the Thoshiba laptop components were not supported by Microsoft and I had to hunt for drivers online (no restore disk). I now have everything working---except for this: When the laptop boots up, it immediately launches the "Found New Hardware Wizard" and searches for new drivers for a Plug & Play monitor which does not exist. I think I may have installed a display driver by accident. How do I determine this? How can I get rid of it? I tried removing the monitor in Device Manager in both regular mode and safemode, but it just keeps coming back so I must have some file telling the laptop it's there somewhere. Thanks for saving my sanity!

Sometimes if you let the OS start the install process for a device andd then cancel it part way through, it will put the device in the Device Manager as 'Unknown Device' and will not recognize it during a boot anymore.

Another option to try is disabling it in the Device Mnager.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

"I think I may have installed a display driver by accident"

What do you mean you installed them "by accident"? You're supposed to install drivers for the display! Everything you need is available for download at the Toshiba website.

Try this link. I'm not sure if it work work or not...it may be "session specific":

OR

Display Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Monitor

uncheck "Automatically detect Plug & Play monitors"

Display drivers & monitor drivers are different things entirely - one's nearly essential, the other... not so much

Thank you to all who offered suggestions. The installation of Win98SE was not interupted. After it was finished, I downloaded al the available drivers from the Toshiba website and installed them believing they would be the "best drivers" to use. I thought perhaps during this process was when I "accidentally" installed something I should not have. I took ham30's advise and let it install the monitor, then went in through Device Manager and disabled it. This seems to have worked as it does not come back upon reboot. I also followed jboy's directions so it should definitely be gone for good! You guys are the best!!!!!!!!!!1

Well, if the monitor driver is installed then regardless, you'd never get the Plug & Play message again (unless maybe if you connect an external monitor)

Monitor drivers may be a tad more important when using LCD (laptop display) than they are for CRTs, but it's the display driver that allows higher resolutions

Glad to hear it's all straightened out
