i have 2 cable modems, one of which is in use and supplied by my isp. but the other which is a motorolla surfboard sb4100 is better than the modem i am currently using. is it possible for me to change the mac id/adress of the motorolla modem to the mac id of the one that i am using so that i can use the motorolla modem? hope that makes sense :)

Yah you can. And it will get rid of the rental charges. Take note what the current MAC id is then make the swap and run the install routine. Although the address you are assigned by the cable company changes often anyway. When you power cycle the surfboard it'll do the rest.
Some people prefer to rent rather than buy since if there's a problem the cable co. has to eat the replacement cost.

The MAC address never changes, it's the IP that changes with a cycle and not always then.
Many ISP's do not care what the MAC address is, have you tried the modem?
If not call the ISP and tell them you want to use your own modem. The MAC address is usually on the back, It is a 12 digit number/letter combo and may be labled the EA or listed as the serial number.
