G'day People,

I was wondering if you have a LPT printer and a Barcode printer that is LPT aswell and only the 1 LPT port in the back of your PC. If I buy a Adapter D25 Female to D9 Female so I can plug my Printer into a Comm port will the printer still work the same as it would if it was pluged into a LPT port?

Thanks for help in Advance.

If you mean trying to use your Com (serial)port as an LPT (parallel) port, no it won't work. Easiest thing to do is get an internal PCI I/O card with an extra parallel port on it - when installed you'll have LPT1 & LPT2

An alternative to an internal PCI Printer card is to install a printer switch. This plugs into the exisiting printer port and has two connections, one for each printer.

It will automaticallty switch between the two printers as required. Belkin do a good one:

Matt,

The other option, if you do not wish to open the PC, is to buy a USB to parallel printer IEEE 1284 adapter cable such as shown here .......

As you probably have an available USB port, this is the easiest and probably least expensive option.

Good luck,
Sandor

I would just add a cheap PCI card to give you another LPT port. They are cheaper than the adapters and you won't have any issues with the software drivers for the barcode printers.

An inexpensive alternative to Stuarts automatic printer switch is a manual switchbox.

I'd still go by the extra card - CPC do this one:

£8 & no need to worry about switching over etc.
