Comment:

Almost every time I use my computer I get a message saying:
"Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file..."

My hard disk is 10GB, and is 66% empty.

The message seemed to appear for the first time after I had intalled Norton Internet Security 2005.

Anybody know what I should be doing? Thank-you in advance for any help provided.

I do not have W2K but I can tell you that Norton Internet Security 2005 is a resource hog which in some ways account for the problems you are now experiencing.

I agree with XP, Norton Software has developed into a bloated piece of c**p.

When Peter Norton was running the show Norton produced some of the best software you could get for a PC. But since Symantec took over, their software has got more and more bloated. It tries to be all things to all men and succeeds with nothing.

I am not familiar with Windows 2K, but there will be a way of increasing the virtual memory. Look in system Properties > Advanced. But with only a 10Gb hard disk, you are not going to have a lot of room to manoeuvre.

Your real solution is to get more RAM (memory). Windows only uses the virtual memory when you run out of RAM space.

Rule #1: Good Computers don't go down.
Rule #2: There is no such thing as a good computer.

I have to disagree with Stuart for once. I've always hated Norton software.

Even Norton Utilities for DOS ham?

It dug me out of a few holes at times. I learnt all about File Allocation Tables and Master Boot Records from Peter Norton. Them were the days when you got a printed manual with your software.

That was then but no one read it. Hence the birth of the acronym RTFM! LOL

I can quite honestly say the RTFM never applied to me. :-)

We agree with Stuart. We too got the same problem in Windows 2k.We cleared this problem by increasing the page file size.
We should follow these steps to increase the page file size.

Steps:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. In the System Properties dialog box, click Advanced
3. Click Performance Options.
4. In the Virtual memory pane, click Change to increase the paging file.

Windows 2000 requires an Initial value of 126 MB for debugging.
5. After you change the setting, click Set, and then click OK.
6. In the System Control Panel Applet dialog box, click OK to the following message:
The changes you have made require you to restart your computer before they can take effect.
7. Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box.
8. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
