Hey guys. I recently got a computer that accepts only a low profile AGP 4x/8x card. I'm looking to throw the best possible option in there. I'm going to go with an ATI branded card. After a little research, I think I've come across the best card for the job.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814241011It's the one and only card that popped up when I selected DVI, low profile, ATI, and DirectX 9. If nobody has any other suggestions, I'll probably go with that one. What do you think?
Also...
I was wondering if it would be better to get a really good PCI based card instead of a low profile AGP card. I am going to assume right off the bat that the answer is no way, but, I'm really not sure if a way better card running through PCI would beat out this less than stellar low profile card running through AGP.
Thanks all!

YUCK, that 9550 is 64 bit.. This is also a low profile 9550 but it is 128bit so much better..

What are you planning to do on this machine? Any gaming?

Hm... how did you find that card? It doesn't say "low profile" anywhere. Just stumble up on it?
I'd like to do some gaming. Nothing heavy.

Yeah, I just searched for any card that was AGP 8X/4X and ATI and only went to the cards that looked low profile, heh. None of the nVidia low profile cards look any good, they all look pretty sucky. The 6200's arent any good.
You'd think one company would try to make a decent performing low profile card, there is probably quite a market for it now with all the SSF computers around. OH and no, all PCI cards are pretty sucky the best you can do is a FX5500 and that 128Bit 9550 would outperform it.Mattwizz3 : )

I have one more question...
The area where the computer screws into the chassis (the tang?) is extremely small. Many of these seem like they have normal sized exteriors, but the card itself is just half as tall.
Is there even more I should be looking into? Is low profile the same as half-height?

Yeah actually I didnt check that. It is Low Profile if it comes with a second... Metal, tab thingo, bit... that is smaller. I dont think that the one I showed you has one... Good luck for your search for graphics cards. Always make sure the card is 128Bit or more.

Aaah, so I can just order a smaller metal tab thing and install it to make any low profile card a half height card?
I think I gotcha.
Thanks a bunch.

You may want to double check that though. I'm not sure if getting your hands on a low profile 'metal tab thing' for a particular card is easy or possible, unless it is actually sold with one. You might want to ask the manufacturer before you buy a card.

This is so stupid.
If they make a low profile card, it should be assumed that people need the card smaller. And need that tab.
UGH.

The height of the card itself is what makes it low profile, not necessarily the bracket. The bracket may be the standard size bracket used on "normal" PCI or AGP cards, or it may be a "low profile" bracket. If that's what you need, keep looking. The bracket alone will cost you close to $10, plus you'd have to find one that has the VGA/S-Video holes in the right locations. This is all I could find doing a quick search:
