Subject: Loud fan noise on compaq notebookOS: XP SP2CPU/Ram: core 2 duo 1.66ghzModel/Manufacturer: presario V3000 |
Comment: Hi, I have a friend who's compaq presario V3000 laptop suddenly started to make a loud buzzing noise from the fan area. It appears that if the sound starts before Windows loads, it will persist on and off until the next restart. But sometimes it doesn't start at all before Windows loads, and during those times that sound is not heard at all until the next restart. From reading about similar problems on the Macbook, I tried installing the RMClock program as advised but it didn't work. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Reply: (edit)Intermittant fan buzzing is a sign of a worn fan bearing or some foreign object obstructing the fan blades, and no amount of software fixes will resolve it. Blow out the dust etc and be prepared to replace the fan if the problem persists. I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Reply: (edit)i concur i say clean first get rid off all the dirt on the fan and air vents on the laptop. if that dont work second open it up and see what nick the fan is. is there a some forien object? are the blades still conected to the motor.( i had one where the blades and axel came away from the motor.) thirdly if all else fails replace. could be expensive if the fan is not generic. just rember how you took the laptop apart. and keep the screws ordered. but and i repeat but!!!! if this fan has a faulty bearing change it as soon as posible. better that than waiting till the fan fails and the laptop overheats and destroys something. do not ignor this problem all text needs typos. There there for the reader to find,to distract them from the total lack of content. google it! wasnt the answer to the question i asked so dont be dense and give me that repl

Reply: (edit)Either replace the affected fan, or open the fan up and place a drop of oil inside the bearing. Probably much easier to just replace it. Time for eBay. Core 2 Duo 1.86
