lost space on hard drive after formatting

I only have 20GB hard drive, 512 ram Cpu1300MHz. The drive has been split in 2 so i have 10 on the C:drive. Windows XP refused to boot so i formatted the C: drive and lost 9GB how? where? i don't know. if there is nothing on the C: drive, where has all the space gone. please help Buffy
