I was given a compaq laptop. It works but the connector where you plug in the power cord is loose. How hard is this to fix? Is this something I could do? Like open it up and tighten something.

There's nothing 'you' can do Betty. The socket has broken loose from the motherboard. It's a common problem with laptops. You need to take it to a shop. If you're lucky they can solder one back on. If it's damaged too bad, it will probably be too expensive to repair.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!
