Hello, everyone. I hope you can help me out. I recently bought a new game and I only get 8-12 FPS with my VIA UniChrome IGP (built into the mobo). I want to buy an AGP video card to speed up this game. My big question is, are even the cheapest AGP cards better than the 'Chrome IGP? Thanks for any opinions!

Anything is better than the crappy UniChrome IGP. Apparently you don't wanna spend too much, correct? How's this?

I'm glad it's not just me. LOL.

I have an 8X nvidea which I'll sell but the shipping is probably a deal-killer. See if your mobo will take it.

I am on a budget. 512 MB of VRAM?!? Whew! And I thought 128 MB was a lot. My new game only requires 32 MB of VRAM. Is there a way to trick Windows into using some of it for system RAM?

The UniChrome IGP is way better than whats in my older COMPAQ Presario-an SiS 530! I get maybe 5 FPS on my older 3D games, and i'm not gonna even try my new one!

Would a better vid adapter also help out Windows XP? (ie. the video transitions in Media Center, watching videos, etc.)

-Won't improve anything 2D (such as Internet browsing)

-May help with Media Center's transitions. Vista's MC is 3D, but I'm not sure if XP's MC is D3D-rendered or not. Are the transitions jerky?

-Won't improve most (web, DVD) video, but a newer card would give high definition video a huge boost, especially on a Sempron.

The SiS530 is THE WORST socket 7 chipset I ever worked with. As a general rule, SiS chipsets suck.

If the card I posted is too expensive, you must REALLY be on a budget. Unfortunately, decent AGP gaming cards are expensive, but just about anything is better than your current IGP.

Here's a few other 128-bit choices:

Radeon X1650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP - $45 after rebate

Radeon 9550 256MB 128-bit DDR - $40 after rebate

GeForce FX 5500 256MB 128-bit DDR AGP - $27 after rebate

And here's a couple of 64-bit cards (128-bit are better for gaming):

Radeon X1550 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 AGP - $32 after rebate

GeForce 6200 256MB 64-bit GDDR2 AGP - $23 after rebate

My uncle just gave me his old AGP video card, which has been sitting in a box for a year, for my birthday. It is an ATI Rage 128 Pro. It's 128 bit-which is good, but I know the Rage series is getting up there in age. I don't know the specs, but based on research, I think it has 32 MB of memory, AGP 4x, and a 300 Mhz GPU. The memory is fine, but if i'm correct, AGP 8x is the fastest. If these specs are wrong let me know. I also want to know how good this card is. I know it wont be top-of-the-line, but will it be better than the UniChrome IGP? Also, do I need a driver or is it plug-and-play? I know i'll have to set the bios to check the AGP slot on bootup. Thanks for any ideas! I'm pretty excited to put in this thing!

I just installed the Rage 128 Pro, and I am slightly disappointed. It turns out it only has 16 MB of RAM, Media Center won't even use transitions because it says it doesn't support the card, and my games aren't much better, either. My game does ok in direct 3D mode (10 - 20 FPS) but it does terrible in OpenGL Mode! (0.7 - 1.5 FPS) I can get up to about 25 FPS in OpenGL mode on the UniChrome. I do notice that Windows seems to run faster, considering I have 64 MB of shared RAM back. And it seems to handle the Video effects in Windows better than the UniChrome can.

I'm also surprised how easy it was to install, when I turned on the computer (with the monitor plugged into the UniChrome's port, incase the Rage 128 Pro wasn't installed yet) the monitor wouldn't come on, so I plugged it into the Rage's port and on it went. Windows installed it as soon as it started. I thought I was gonna have to find a driver on the internet or something. (Thank God for Plug and Play!)
