Hello,
I'm having serious trouble with my Lite-On 12102C CD-RW drive. I've read a lot of good things about them, and it has been working perfectly until recently. However, any tech support they do offer is severely lacking.
Right now my drive does not work at all. When I put a data CD in the drive, it tells me that I have a CD-ROM in the drive with no data on it. I can put CD-R's in the drive, but when I try to burn a CD with Easy CD Creator, it just freezes at the end of "Writing table of contents", and I can hear the drive keep humming trying to read/write the disc, even when I shut down the program. My brother has tried other burning programs (Nero, etc) and they haven't worked either.
I've only had the computer about 18 months, and probably burned 100 discs or less, so I find it hard to believe the drive is worn out. Can't find drivers or anything on websites, the Lite-On site is terrible and useless. I haven't gotten around to testing the burner in a different CPU, because I want to try everything first to see if it is the software side that is the problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

You should uncheck the setting that checks the cd for errors before it burns it.
If you need help doing this post again

Check the power and IDE connectors that they are tightly connected. Is there another drive on the same IDE channel that your burner is on?

You can eliminate software as the problem by booting up with a win98 floppy with cdrom support (www.bootdisk.com) and see if you can access the drive ok. If it acts the same under Dos you have a drive problem. Cleaning `might' help.

hello
go look in device manager for problems
any showing? if so deal with them. if not try
removeing cd-rw from device manager and reboot. allso try d/l xp compatable drivers from cd-rw makers sight.
have a nice day

Manufacturers site is crap, I can't find Lite-On CDRW drivers at all. No problems listed in device manager, it's not the check for errors thing b/c Windows Explorer won't even show me any files if I put a normal data CD in the drive.
Booting up with a Win 98 boot disk should still work fine with Win XP right? I couldn't find any info in help about any XP-specific boot disks. If it can recognize the drive, then I will crack it open and check the connections. Thanks

I checked the cable connections, it was all fine. The drive seems to recognize and read when I put CD's in the drive(NBA Live 2003 worked fine), but any burning does not work at all. Tried uninstalling all burning programs except Easy CD Creator(which worked originally), still doesn't work.
Now this is even weirder. I tried hooking up the drive in a machine with Win 98 SE. As soon as the CPU started up, the tray opened. I closed it, but within 3 seconds it opened up again. No matter what I do, the tray won't stop opening up.
