liquid spill may have caused fan to stop work

Specs: Windows Vista
compaq presario CQ61 fan stopped working. sent it in as still under warranty. they detected liquid contamination and refused to look any further to correct problem as say this automatically voided warranty. tell me would cost 200 pounds to replace major parts, can't afford this. Can i take the laptop apart and clean the liquid damage, remove dust from fan/heatsink myself. there appears to be no other damage from liquid spill, a small amount of lemonade about 4 months ago,, other than the fan stopped working the laptop operates fine, perfectly in fact, except for the fan. I figure its worth giving it a go myself as cannot afford the repair for some time and its vital for me have laptop for my studies at the moment, especially since now the warranty is voided. Any ideas would be much appreciated. I'm not expert, but can recognise parts and follow instructions pretty well.
