Rather than set up a network just to transfer data (if that is all that you require), have a look at laplink, which does the same using the com ports and is simple to use.
Check out www.wown.com, you can use Direct Cable Connection, it is inbuilt into Windows and the cost of a LapLink cable is under €20

Make a crossover cable.... cost less than a dollar to make.... if you have the tools that is.

I just made a net for my 2 comp. it was a complete set with 2 LAN-cards (10/100) and a cable.
Under Xp. it is allmost selfinstalling.
Total cost less than EUR 20

I you want to use Ethernet cale (known commonly as CAT 5), then as said you need a CROSSOVER cable NOT STRAIGHT through, and two NICs (Network Interface Card) with the RJ45 connection on each. Just make sure that you get the correct card for you PCs BUS type (either PCI, ISA) but go for PCI if you can.
