No, for only 2 PCs you won't need a router, only one cable.
I presume you have ethernet cards installed in those computers. All you need is a crossover cable. You can make your own cable or buy it.

Have Fun.

Then you will need a router. Or you could install the cable modem on one of the PC and share the conection thru another ethernet card to the other PC. But it this case you will have to always keep the server PC on so that the second PC can acces the internet.

Router is the way to go.

GooD LucK!

While a router is the preferred solution. It is not necessary.

Microsoft introduced Internet Connection Sharing in windows 98. After installing the crossover cable, you run the ICS wizard in the PC with the internet connection. This should tell you where to go from there.

A router is better because it takes the load off the serving computer. Both computers can access the internet independant of each other. The router introduces Network Address Translation which makes life really tough for hackers, and Stateful Packet Inspection which only receives requested packets from the internet. Tag along nasties don't get through!

In your situation ICS will most probably work well. The addition of a router (perhaps wireless) will allow future expansion.

I guess I spent too much time in the networking forum and seen too many tales of woe when (trying to) using ICS. Never tried it myself, I use a wireless router.
