Hi guys,

Can anyone confirm my thoughts on a problem that accured on my pc..?

My PC died last night ... just went dead .?
I tried to turn it back on but the power switch was not working...?

Now... i have an antec true 550w PSU and my first thought was the PSU has blown but when a PSU blows you get a burning smell and also the lights are still on, on the mobo and to test the PSU you can connect 2 of the pins with a wire on the main connector .. now when i did this and turned the PSU on all of the 7 case fans and HDDs powered up and the lights was flashing on the front of my DVDrom and my DVD-RW .... Maybe this says to me that the PSU is ok...? Anyone confirm this..?

After doing the above i've now come to the conclusion that the problem is down to my mobo...?. hence "Lights are on, but nobody home"

My pc runs daily at 208X12.5 @2.0v =2610mhz and my spec is in my sig...

Many thanks for reading my post

If your PSU is powering the fans etc. then it's almost certainly ok - especially as it'a a decent make. Chances are it is a CPU or MOBO problem - if you have a PCI modem you can try removing that - you may have had a spike without realising it.

Hi,

Thanks for the fast responce..

I do not have a PCI Modem so i dont think that would be the cause and also if the CPU had blown i think the power switch would still work but no post..

Your PS can definitely have a problem but no hot insulation smell, and all lights are on. There are several rails coming out of it, and it takes only one go bad to create problems. Go to Newegg or CompUSA and get a power supply tester-that's the only way to test for sure. Newegg has a Powmax for $16 incl. shipping, CompUSA is around $20. I just replaced a friend's bad PS that was causing random reboots because the 12V rail contact in the plug was burned PARTIALLY in a voltage spike. Never would have found it without a tester.

FYI the motherboard has circuits on it to check the inputs from the power supply. If the motherboard thinks that it's not getting all the right voltages it does not send a `power good' signal to the power supply. This prevents the power supply from staying up. This could be caused by either a bad power supply or a motherboard problem.

You are right some mobos do have that. But that will not help if the rail is dodgy, meaning it flickers from true to low. The Shuttle AN35N booted fine, stayed up, ran perfect, then after an hour suddenly started to reboot, reboot, reboot. Then it stayed up again, etc. The PS tester reported good continuity on the PS for about a minute, then flickered on the 12 V rail readout, then stayed on, after another minute flickered on that rail again, etc. That is what was causing the random reboots.
The only way to check it other than a tester is to replace the PS and let the computer run for 24 hours. And sometimes that will fool you also.

Thanks for your imput guys...

I took all the connections out and blew them out with compressed air and believe it or not the problem is fixed...

Not sure if it was dust or a loose connection...?

Problem sorted..... these things are here to try us...!!!! bloody computers...lol

thanks again...
