Is there any way to estimate just how long a computer will last? By "last", I mean running as if it were new or nearly new.

If you make minimum software changes to the system, you will probably have fewer system software problems. Installing and uninstalling programs tends to bring on problems.
The hardware is very reliable and can last many, many years.

The hard drive usually dies first, but if it makes it past the first few years, it'll probably last another 10. CD-ROM drives tend to also die earlier than other components. I don't often see old computers with bad CPUs, motherboards, or RAM.

Windows will get slow from fragmentation and gradual registry corruption from installing and uninstalling, as mach mentioned, but you can't blame the hardware for that.

The average life of a computer depends on many factors such as location (is it in a hot dusty environment?), quality of original components (did any components have any manufacturing defects), usage (constant use may cause faster wear, setup (are there multiple fans and good airflow), etc..

Most computers get trashed, recycled, sold or given away because they no longer meet the needs of the owner - i.e. they cannot run newer software.

I had some old pc's in storage at work that were over 10 years old and run fine. They will just not run any software I need them to. They got donated.
