ive not been able to use my printer (lexmark z42) for quite a while now, before it would just stop a few seconds into printing but now it isnt even printing at all.
i notice now that in device manager USB printing support has a yellow exclamation circle next to it althought im sure this wasnt there before (even when it started not to work but i cant be sure) so im thinking maybe its the result of me messing around trying to get it to work again, i dont know.
Ive disabled/set to manual quite a lot of services from the services using the service program so im thinking i might have disabled something i shouldnht have that might of started the troubles in the first place. For some reason the start all services option is greyed out though so i cant put this to the test. (i disabled services going by this guide at http://snakefoot.fateback.com/tweak/winnt/services.html)
also of note is a nasty clunking noise that the printer seems to make nowadays when its starting up so it might just be a hardware program, any suggestions? maybe one what services should be started up. i have the latest drivers installed and have tried reinstalling many times

I would remove the printer thru device manager and physically. Un-install the software for the printer thru control panel. Re-boot and re-install the software for the printer. Plug in the printer and windows should install it.

I did read your post.
You said:

When you re-install software on top of itself it doesn't always work. That is why I suggested what I did. Also, it has been my experience with usb printers that installing the software first and then plugging in the printer gives better results. You did not indicate how you were re-installing.

thing is though, when i go to install new printer in printers it says to let windows install and configure it automatically when you plug it in. so that doesnt work this that. plus i was always able to install the thing by just plugging it in first before so why not now? also there never is an entry for the printer anymore in add/remoce programs for some reason. despite the drivers being installed
i just removing an entry from device manager (something relating top printer service or somehting or other) and restarting and now i get an entry called unknown device =(

USB shares resources with all the devices on that particular channel. If you try connecting the USB printer before installing the software XP will try to install it using windows resources. If you pre-install the software and hot plug the printer it should find the proper resources on its own. If that yellow exclamation mark stays in device manager you may want to remove that USB controller also. Do you have the proper USB drivers installed for your particular motherboard or are windows default drivers being used. You should usually use the drivers supplied by the chipset or motherboard manufacturer. There are some exceptions to this rule but as I stated, it's usually better. Sometimes they are the same drivers. Also, download the latest version of these drivers from the MB website. This includes drivers for IDE, AGP and integrated periphials.

i tried installing teh software beforehand but now its just not detecting the printer at all since i removed that entry with the yellow exclamation. it never came back...or it did but is being displayed as unknown. or is that the printer?
i dont know if i have the right usb drivers, i certainly havnt installed any by my own accord. i'll try that but i always find it a bit confusing. i mean the gigabyte site doesnt even seem to have the audio drivers for my board. i'll see what i can do tho

Have you re-booted the computer in between these proceedures? Delete the printer using the start menu> printers> remove the cable from the computer> re-boot> Insert the cable for the printer> what happens?
What is the model of your motherboard?

i think its fixed =D
very pleased i am, im not sure exactly what the problem was but i'll post it on here if your interested when i find out
thanks for your help mate =)

i spoke too soon, i managed to print one page out but now im back to the original problem of it stopping after a few seconds printing.
and it keeps sending the paper thru everytime i turn it onn and off and the lights jam =/

There were two entries for the printer, one called z42 colorfine and the other z42 jet printer. It was when i chose the jetprinter in the print process that i got it to print a page off. After deleting the colorfine antry and restarting i now have no printers installed according to windows. whats going on =[

The ultimate solution is to do what my friends and I have done with our Lexmarks--we got rid of them altogether. We all had various problems with them and the cost of the ink was just not worth it. We've all switched to Epson, Canon and HP. The Epson and Canon printers have individual ink wells for each color and are a lot cheaper to replace. The printers are more expensive to purchase than Lexmark but in the long run, they are more than worth it.
