I just bought a Dell Dimension 8400 with a Dell 20" LCD monitor. On my first start-up there was nothing on the LCD screen. I called Dell tech support and they had "no idea." After attempting different solutions Tech had me change the video cables, taking off the DVI(digital) cable and replacing with the VGI(analog) cable. Works fine. I suspect it has something to do with the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce video card. So the analog connection works fine but I bought this set-up for the LCD digital capability. And I'm sure Dell already knows about this issue yet is selling the Ultra Sharp LCD as digital (when it only works as analog)...What to do? How can this be fixed, in the most simple fashion...short of a return to Dell. I would think Dell should be held to task for the thousands of systems sold this way. Meanwhile, HELP! (please)

I really shouldn't lash out at Dell. Obviously I'm not that knowledgeable and I'm upset. My upset and question is "does it matter not being able to use the DVI connection" for the monitor? Does it mean the monitor is not digital...and what of it? Does it really matter (enough to send the entire system back to Dell?). My wife does her photo work on the computer. Please understand our anxiety...or am I just making much ado about nothing? I think I have 2 days left for the return-policy. That's a hassle. We saved up a long time.

You should get what you pay for. If the supplier does not come through with the deal, they should be held accountable!

I don't know why you felt it necessary to contact me through private message. What you said should be open to public scrutiny. It is not you that isat fault here. It is Dell who made the promise and failed to deliver.

I would like to include your PM in this forum. If you wish me not to do so, olease indicate your wishes. I personally do not see any reason to keep this private, Dell might want otherwise.

I agree with Rimfire. Return it and get a new one.

You may, or may not know this already, but your return policy begins on the day it ships not the day you received the system. So, don't delay.

It's my first time ever trying to problem solve this way..wasn't sure about protocol.

First up here is the PM.

From DellBoy. Is it a serious issue that the DVI cable that came with my computer does not work the monitor and that I can only use the VGI (analog) connection? What does it really mean, what's affected, what's lost? Thanks for your help. DellBoy (Jeffrey)

I'm not sure about the warranty cover you have. I thought that Dell offered onsite warranty. If you call them and explain your problem, they should send a technician out with at least a new video card to resolve it.

Make sure that you call them before the warranty expires as arguing pre-existing fault is much more difficult later on.

Well there's no sense in having a digital LCD if you can't make use of it, is there?

And you wanted to make use of it - right?

So then call DELL, explain to them that something is wrong - the video card seems only to be working with analog - and they should help you out.

Have you tried using the monitor on another computer with a video card that supports digital?

If it works then you know for sure it is the video card and not the monitor.
