i have loads of queries

XP's Plug and Play Monitor drivers were not designed to be used with recent LCD or other than CRT displays.
If you haven't already, load the specific drivers for your monitor.
Windows will then by default only show you the settings both the monitor and video drivers support properly.
There may be a driver install on the CD that came with it - if not you change the monitor drivers in Display - Settings - Advanced - Monitor - etc., and click on Have Disk and point to a location on the CD, or to (an) uncompressed driver file(s) you downloaded from a Samsung web site for your model (Windows is looking for an *.inf file). You may be able to change the brightness and contrast both in the monitor's built in OSD (On Screen Display) settings, and in settings in Windows in Display - Settings - Advanced - the OSD ones may work better.
You may also have the Magic Tune program on the CD that came with the monitor - if so install it and try it.
.....If needed......
Turn on Clear Type in Windows XP or Vista - makes type/fonts on LCD screens look clearer.
