I have acquired a Latitude LS Model Number PPO1S Dell Part Number 59DMF A02.
This computer has Windows NT installed. The person from whom I acquired the laptop tried to change the passwords when he was trying to Install XP on the machine. Apparently proper procedures were not followed, and now the lap top will not start up. When the start button is pressed, the run lights come on, but immediatly shut off and the computer is again turned off.

I have searched for a procedure to fix this problem but I am unable to find any help. I have been to dell, and I have tried to call dell, but I can only get automated service, and when I give give the service tag number, I get a message saying the service has expired, and I am disconnected.

I think if I remove the internal button battery, and leave it out overnight, the system should reset, and then perhaps I could get into set up and assign new passwords. But, I do not know how to open the case to get to the button battery.

Any and all help is deeply appreciated.

Thanks

Pecanaze

This doesn't sound like a password problem. If it was, the laptop would complete post and then ask for the password. It is however possible that the former owner changed something in bios that won't allow the pc to boot.

The usual cause of laptops turning off immediately is lack of battery charge. Is the charger working?

I don't know if this is applicable, I have an earlier Dell Latitude that had a similar problem. The solution was tightening the case screws on the bottom. In mine the one in the middle apparently connects parts of the circuits together.
