Using the large disk support (>64gb) version of FDISK I cannot get my 120gb hdd to recognize as anything other than 31.4gb. Even in my BIOS now it says it's that size. It was 120gb this evening before I embarked on this adventure.

Deleted all partitions. Changed IDE. Running Windows XP. Try Partition magic or what?

If you formatted it in FAT32 then that's your answer. XP can only handle fat32 partitions up to the 31.4 gb limit. Use Fdisk to delete all partitions. redo a new partition and let XP format in ntfs. If you prefer to stay in FAT32 then you should make 3 partitions of say 20,30,30

Disks with partitions larger than 32GB and formatted with FAT32 can be mounted by Win2000 & WinXP. You can't format partitions larger than 32GB using 2000 or XP. The solution, should you need it, is to perform the format with Win98 and then install XP. Due to cluster sizes you are better off either creating smaller partitions or using NTFS. The cluster sizes for FAT32 are as follows:
512MB to 8,191MB = 4KB
8,192MB to 16,383MB = 8KB
16,384MB to 32,767MB = 16KB
Larger than 32,768MB = 32KB

NTFS - All partitions on a PC = 4KB default

Even when I delete all the partitions with FDISK and let windows handle it, it will only recognize it as a 31 gb hdd. I converted to NTFS and same problem.

Many large hard drives have a jumper that limits the size to 32 gigs (for legacy support on older computers). check your hard drive's manual and see if this is the case.

Was this disk moved from another computer to the present one? Or did you create the partitions in the past on that machine? Your BIOS may have the 32GB limit.

BIOS's never had a 32gig limit.
