Laptop won't read external drive

Specs: Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit, Athlon 3000+/2 GB RAM

Hi, When I plug my external HD into my laptop's USB port, I get a message saying something like:

"Ĕŷã^,þ>ỷN}ï - installing driver software..."

Then it sits there "installing" for maybe 10 minutes and then when it stops, no error, but the drive isn't showing on Windows Explorer.

Sometimes it never stops "installing".

So the laptop is at least recognizing that one is plugged in.

I have replaced the external enclosure with numerous drives, with data on them, it happens on all of them so I am thinking it is an issue with my laptop... not the drives.

Any advice?

Thank you.

Does this sound like a controller card issue by chance?

Thank you

download your device driver, your computer surely need help to find the correct driver. I understand looking for device driver is tiresome. so use a tool to do the dirty job for you... try here >> windows driver

Yeah, my Windows is fully updated and the manufacturer of the Hard Drive Enclosure (Coolmax) says I don't need any driver other than what Windows provides
