Laptop won't power on

Gateway / M-6750

Specs: Win Vista Home Prem. SP1, Intel Core 2 Duo
My laptop is not working anymore. It is a gateway M-6750. It all started when I went to open it (power cord plugged in and battery in) and the screen was blank. Everything else seemed to be on. Then I closed it and took out the battery and plugged it in only. Then I pressed the power button and it lit for 1 second and turned off. It has now been this way ever since. So I took every component out and unpluged the CMOS battery. I held the power button down to to a discharge. With no components at all, I turned it on and the power light stayed lit for awhile. I then added components and try turning it on as I added each one (still no battery in it). With each component in, the power light stayed on for a while. Only with the CPU in, did it do the only turning on for 1 second thing. So I'm thinking it's the CPU. But all through this the screen never turned on. So I really don't know what's wrong.

"So I'm thinking it's the CPU."
not likely, cpu's don't go bad as often as motherboards or power supplies.

OK, so how can I test the motherboard or power supply? And are these things replaceable for laptops?
