Laptop won't boot up

Hewlett-packard Hewlett packard pavilion...

Specs: Linux
Now, it is an older HP laptop. I usually don't connect it to the internet because it is so old. Up until recently, it has worked perfectly fine and I typically use it for writing. One day I tried to boot it up but it seemed to attempt to kick on but then it fails. The disc player works and I can play a CD outloud on it still but the rest of the laptop won't turn on, including the screen. I wish I knew what was wrong especially since I've lost all my previous writing.

It could be the following.

1. Screen dead
Try to connect to a external monitor and see if anything is coming. (You may need to press fn+ a function key on top to redirect ). If you can see video on screen that means your screen is dead.

2. If screen is not dead then, it has to be the video card. If its video card you need to replace the motherboard. ( not worth repairing).

3. You can still get data from it. You can take your hard drive out and restore data.
