Laptop Start up extremely slow & unreliable

Specs: Windows 7

I have a Windows Vista Home Premium I got almost a year ago and it's been working just fine until about last month. I turned it off like usual at a friend's house and the next day, my laptop would take nearly half an hour to start up. I didn't download anything before shutting off nor have I went to foreign websites. I scanned my computer as well for any viruses, but it came up blank.

Most of the problem is when logging in. It'll be stuck on the welcome screen for a long time. Sometimes it will go to a black screen with just my mouse and be stuck there for another 10 minutes or it won't log in at all. It's become frustrating to turn on my computer from cold boot every time so I leave it on hibernation. Everything's been running fine as far as I can tell from the task manager. I'm not a very technical person so if there's any instructions, can you please be specific?

Thank you.

Try a system restore to the date when you had not problems.
If that does not help then try a start up repair. For this you will probably need a recovery disk set from the factory.
Run Malwarebytes t make sure you do not have an infection (they do not only come from foreign sites, we have almost as many idiots here doing stupid things).
I do not use VIsta but it is similar to W7, if you need specifics I can try or someone else will fill in the blanks, just ask.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
