Hi,

I just got a hold of a few laptops:

Dell PP01L - Pentium 4
Dell PP05L - Centrino

My question is, which is the better one? The PP05L looks newer, and I think Centrino is better for mobile coputing because of battery life and efficiency - but I "think" it is a lower ghz compared to the PP01L based on the quick Google searches I did on each model.
Could someone tell me which one should be the one I keep, so I know which ones to sell and to give to a couple family members.
Any hekp would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

What tasks will be performed on the Laptop? That question will determine which one.

Centrino is not a CPU, it's a "Technology Package". The CPU contained in the package is the Pentium-M.

I suggest you go to the Dell site & compare the specs. I believe these are both from the Latitude D600 series?

I will be using it mainly for internet browsing - nothing really too memory intense like video editing or the newest games or anything. I know that they will both be fine for what *I* want to do with them, but I still want the better of the two ;)

Jam:

You are correct, they are both Latitude series. The PP01L is a C640, and the PP05L is a D600.

I will have a look at the Dell site, but I wanted to see if anyone has an opinion on which processor will be better. I am guessing the Pentium M Centrino over the P4.

The Pentium M does one hell of a lot more work per clock cycle than the P4 does. The P4 is one of the lowest IPC (Instructions per Cycle) processors to ever roll out of Intel.

A 1.6GHz Pentium M, for example, performs about the same as a Pentium 4 at 3.2GHz in the vast majority of apps. It does even better than the P4 in office apps (due to the short instruction pipeline and large cache) and slightly worse in tasks where faster SIMD performance is required (such as encoding audio).

I'd definitely choose the Pentium M-based model. They're far less power-hungry than the P4.

Super Pentium III: NOW WITH 7950GT AGP!
PIII-S cpu overclocked to 1.66GHz--As fast as a 2.5GHz P4!
2GB of PC2700 memory
QDI Advance 12T board
Audigy 2
Vista Home Premium

Go to Dell's website and enter the Service Tags of each machine. You can obtain the Original Configuration and if you have them online, the Current Configuration.
